In 1930, GRAEFF invented the first pressure sensor conversion mechanism. In this mechanism, the movement of the diaphragm, spring or Bourdon tube is converted into the electrical quantity, the pressure diaphragm becomes the capacitance part, and the indicator movable mechanism becomes the potentiometer branch, thus realizing the pressure measurement and control device.
In 1945, Italian engineer Roberto Colombo commissioned GRAEFF to develop a Melt Pressure Sensor suitable for polymer processing. After years of testing, the GRAEFF team completed sensor application tests on multiple extruders between 1947 and 1949, ultimately launching the world's first commercial Melt Pressure Sensor—the GPSI series—in 1950. This product was mass-produced by the British company R.H. Windsor and applied to twin-screw extruders. Thus, the world's first Melt Pressure Sensor was successfully developed by GRAEFF in 1950 and applied to twin-screw extruders.
